With an abundance of forwards and some of their defensemen banged up, the Adirondack Phantoms announced on Tuesday evening two transactions that will help balance their lineup.

Rookie defenseman Matt Konan was recalled from the Trenton Titans, Adirondack’s ECHL affiliate, and rookie forward Matt Mangene was reassigned to Trenton in his place.

Earlier Tuesday, Phantoms coach Terry Murray said defenseman Oliver Lauridsen will be seeing a doctor Wednesday for a lingering upper-body injury he’s played through, but the team has “to get an opinion on.” Fellow defenseman Marc-Andre Bourdon missed his second straight day of practice Tuesday morning after an undisclosed illness kept him out of Saturday’s game.

Second-year pro blueliner Jeff Dimmen is back skating, but has not played a game since suffering an injury during a practice in mid-November. Depending on Dimmen's game-ready status, the addition of Konan gives the Phantoms either six or seven healthy defensemen. AHL teams usually dress six.

Konan, above right, spent the first several weeks of the season skating with the Phantoms while recovering from offseason sports hernia surgery, but didn't appear in a game. The 21-year-old Tustin, Calif. native was assigned to Trenton on Nov. 23 and recorded one assist in five ECHL games. He scored 54 points in his final season of junior hockey for the WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers.

Mangene, below right, a 23-year-old University of Maine product, has not played for Adirondack since suffering a concussion in the team’s Oct. 28 win at Syracuse. He had one assist in four games with the Phantoms prior to his injury, but had skated as an extra forward since returning to practice last week.

Murray has previously spoken about the importance of getting young players playing time, particularly in the case of center Andrew Johnston, who was assigned to the ECHL last month.

"We felt with Andrew that he was out of the lineup," Murray said of Johnston at the time. "When he was in, he played OK. He's out right now and he's missed the last couple games, so a young kid -- first year of pro hockey -- it's real important that we get him to a place he can play as a very important player. He can play on the top line, play a lot of minutes in all situations and continue the development of his game."

The Phantoms (9-11) look to snap a three-game losing streak when they visit Rochester Friday night.
